BTG Fitness is Proud to Be a 3-Time Nominee for a Business Excellence Award!

The team at BTG Fitness is honoured to announce that we were nominated again for the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, in the category of Home Based Business Excellence.

This is our third time being nominated, and as before, we are very humbled and appreciative that someone thinks highly enough of what we do and the great community of people we have built at The BTG to put our name forward.

BTG owners, JP & Raina Siou, will be attending the annual Business Excellence Awards dinner this coming Thursday, November 23rd, and look forward to an entertaining event.  Maybe third time's the charm, and we'll bring home some hardware this year...LOL!

Coach JP - now Spartan SGX certified!

Coach JP - now Spartan SGX certified!

Just a quick post to share the news that I've (finally) completed all the requirements to become a Spartan SGX Coach, making me one of only three in BC, I think.

So now I'm "officially" certified to make you do tons of burpees, hang from things, climb over walls and carry weird stuff over crappy terrain, where before I was just really mean...LOL.

Free Preview of My First Book, As It's Being Written!

Free Preview of My First Book, As It's Being Written!

So, I've decided to write a book.  It's going to be partly a journal chronicling the training, nutrition and progress of myself and the BTG Spartan Team as we prepare for the 2017 season, partly a training and nutrition guide to preparing for your first Spartan Beast (in particular, a mountainous grinder like Sun Peaks, Montana or Lake Tahoe) or just to become a great all-rounder fitness-wise, and hopefully a little bit of an inspirational and entertaining tale along the way.

Here's the first part of the Introduction (or maybe chapter 1?) that I just finished writing, covering a bit of back-story, including our semi-disastrous 2016 preseason, breaking my ankle one week before our first Spartan Race of 2016, and the beginning of my comeback from that disaster at the end of May to completing four Spartan Races in 49 days from early September to yesterday (October 22), including a Trifecta (Sprint, Super and Beast in the same year) plus a second Beast.  It's 2166 words so far, and I've only gotten to where I got the OK from the doctor to start walking unassisted!

The continuation of the introduction (or maybe chapter 2?), which I'll also publish here on the blog, will complete the journey through to the end of our racing season, and bring things up to the current date.

If you're interested in reading the whole book online, as it is created, sign up to my advance reader list by clicking THIS LINK.  I'll also provide a link at the end of this preview chapter, for once I've hooked you with my riveting content - LOL!  Seriously, though, I'd really appreciate having a few more sets of eyes on this as I create it to help catch any typos and to give me quick feedback on whether it's interesting/useful enough reading or not!

Spartan Race Trifecta Training Plan

Spartan Race Trifecta Training Plan

With only 13 weeks until the Spartan Vancouver Sprint, it's time to really buckle down and amp-up our training!  We're also 28 weeks out from the big finale - the Spartan Sun Peaks Beast!

Click this link if you want to see the overall, 28-week plan all laid out.

I'm going to be posting the actual workouts as we progress through them, so if you want to follow along (whether you're going to race with us or not), feel free!

Spartan Beast Sun Peaks 2015 - The Hardest Thing I've Ever Done

Spartan Beast Sun Peaks 2015 - The Hardest Thing I've Ever Done

Let's not sugar coat it - nothing I have ever experienced or could even have conceptualized in my mind can compare.  This was easily the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

Having never done anything like this before, we thought a 4-1/2 to 5 hour estimate to complete the 21+ km course with 34 obstacles was feasible.  7-1/2 hours later, the four of us (myself, Coach Julia, and brothers Scott and Dillon) were about as broken as we've ever been.

The obstacles were no big deal, really - but the terrain!  Oh, the terrain!  Did I mention the terrain?

BTG Performance Testing 2015.09

BTG Performance Testing 2015.09

Over the last couple of weeks, we've put most of our members through a few performance tests to get a baseline of where everyone's at, see how far (if at all) they need to go to meet the standards we've set, and help us evaluate whether our standards are reasonable for the typical general fitness type of person (as opposed to professional or high-level recreational athletes).

The tests we looked at this time around were our push-up and deadlift strength endurance tests, and our 10-minute dumbbell snatch power endurance test.

Great job Raina! Abbotsford Triathlon 2015

Great job Raina! Abbotsford Triathlon 2015

Great job by Raina on her return to sprint triathlon competition.  For those of you who didn't know, Raina was out of commission and barely able to walk back in late January of this year with a herniated disc, and wasn't sure that she'd ever be able to run again at all, never mind get back to her favourite event, sprint triathlons.

Well, today, she was back, and finished 12th female overall, and 4th in her age group.  Awesome performance, particularly considering where she was just seven months ago, barely able to walk to the end of our driveway and back - we're super proud of her!

The Weekend Ahead!

We're really looking forward to a great weekend!

Today, we're heading up to Kamloops, BC to support "The BTG Mighty Mice" at FEMSPORT Kamloops tomorrow (Saturday, May 25) - GO TEAM!  Pics and video to follow after the event! :)

Right after the event is done on Saturday, we're driving back down to Abbotsford, where we'll be participating in The Run For Water 5K Fun Run the next morning, on Sunday (May 26).

Should be a fun and action-packed couple of days!
